How to shop local this holiday season

This year has been a terrible year for many. Job loss, businesses closing down or shutting their doors for a second time, perhaps a dramatic cut in your hours? COVID-19 has drastically impacted the physical and mental health of so many Canadians. With lockdowns and restrictions continuing across the country, it is more important than ever to support small businesses in our community whenever possible, our continued support is crucial to their survival. As a credit union, we know the value of supporting your local business sector as well as taking care of those close by.  Here are 3 easy ways you can support small or local business this holiday season:

1) Treat yourself and try ordering take out food.  Change your selection to a locally owned restaurant instead of a chain. Many family-owned smaller restaurants have depended on loyal locals to maintain their businesses and are at risk of permanently closing due to this lockdown and continued seating restrictions. Consider curbside pickup to save both yourself and the restaurant on delivery and service fees.

2) Order from your local brewery! Craft breweries have been popping up across the country the past few years. Many of them may be right within your own town or city. Now is a great time to try some of their selections yourself or purchase as a gift for that beer fan on your list.  Some of my favourite gift ideas for the craft brewery lover in my family, have been a brewery gift pack filled with coasters, beer, a hat or t-shirt. This is a great way to try out something new and support local.

3) Search social media to support a friend or family member’s new business. Especially around the holiday season, I have seen a growing presence on social media of local shops selling customized Christmas ornaments, teacher appreciation gifts, stocking stuffers, holiday pillows and much, much, more. Not only are you supporting a local shop and bringing business directly to the members of your community, but you can also get some unique and personalized gifts for your loved ones.
