Handmade Gifts to keep you on budget this Holiday Season

December 20th 2016 - by Amanda Perkins

The holidays can be a very expensive time of year, especially if your gift exchange list of friends and family members is long.  A great way to save money and add a bit of extra thought into your gift giving is hand making them yourself.   Check out 2 of our favourite Handmade gifts under $10 that can make the most of a small budget with love.

1)      Homemade Mason Jar Hot Chocolate Mix

What you will need:

-          2 cups powdered sugar

-          1 cup unsweetened cocoa

-          1 teaspoon salt

-          2 teaspoons cornstarch

-          1 pinch cayenne pepper

-          2 cups non-fat dry milk powder

-          1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Add sugar and cocoa to a food processor (or whisk by hand). Pulse until well mixed. Add salt, cornstarch and cayenne; pulse until mixed. Add powdered milk; process for 20 – 30 seconds until well mixed. Transfer mix to bowl and stir in chocolate chips. Store in a mason jar, decorate with a festive ribbon or string.

2)      Handmade Monogram Keychains

What you will need:

-          Clay in black, white and granite

-          Rolling pin

-          Parchment paper

-          Clay cutters (or small cookie cutters)

-          Clay embossing kit

-          Toothpick

-          Assorted jump rings

-          Key rings

-          Two pliers

Directions:

Lay parchment paper down on top of a cutting board. Roll a piece of clay into a small ball then use the rolling pin to roll it out. Cut out the shape from the clay with the clay cutters and remove the excess clay. Using your clay embossing kit, stamp the desired letters into the clay.  Use a tooth pick to poke a hole near the top for the key rings.  Make sure it is a wide enough hole to fit your key jump in.  Bake at 230F for 40 minutes (or until clay hardens). Bend a jump ring open and slide it through the toothpick hole. Before bending it shut, slide another small jump ring through.  You can then slide this smaller jump ring onto a key ring.

Enjoy!
